Master Gardeners Hold Seminar for Public on March 5th
The Free State Master Gardener Association of Van Zandt County will host a seminar for the public on Tuesday evening, March 5th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Silver Spur Resort in Canton, featuring Greg Grant, Smith County AgriLife Agent, as the speaker.
Greg calls himself an “old school horticulturist” and has worked in practically every aspect of horticulture there is: retail, wholesale, academia, etc. He has been enamored with nature since he was a child, learning about gardening and all things related while working alongside his grandparents and parents at their farm in East Texas where he still lives today.
Greg has a bachelor’s degree in floriculture and a master’s in horticulture from Texas A&M and is a well-known author of several books. He is currently an associate researcher at the Piney Woods Native Plant Center, writes for the Texas Gardener Magazine, has a monthly blog on arborgate.com, and more, but that is not what makes him so interesting as a speaker. It’s his ability to pass along in a humorous way the knowledge he’s gained through years of hands-on experience working in East Texas summers in a myriad of soils, coping with bugs and diseases specific to our locale, experimenting with new methods of agriculture and retaining some old ones to find better ways of growing plants and taking care of our environment.
If you have the slightest interest in learning more about the flora and fauna outside your door, and how to grow it, or if you are just looking for an enjoyable evening out with a humorous speaker and friendly people you will not want to miss this seminar!
Pre-registration is required by calling the VZ County Extension Office, 903-567-4149, by February 28th. A $20 fee will be taken at the door.
The FSMGs will also host Chris Weisinger on September 24th, 6:00 p.m., who will speak on Heirloom Bulbs. Chris is the owner of The Southern Bulb Company, has published several books, and is also from the East Texas area.
