Somervell County – Lasagna Gardening, Growing Herbs, and What You Need to Know about Africanized Bees

September 20, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Want to meet a fun group of plant enthusiasts? Then come join us for “Master Gardeners Present,” a program being presented by the Somervell County Master Gardener Association on Saturday, September 20 from 10 to noon at the Somervell Citizens Center located at 209 SW Barnard St, Glen Rose, TX 76043. Three topics will be discussed. FREE

The first presentation will be on Lasagna Gardening. Lasagna gardening is a no-till, no-dig method of building garden beds by layering organic materials—like cardboard, newspaper, straw, and kitchen scraps—to decompose into rich, healthy soil over time. Beverly White, a Somervell County Master Gardener since 2019, has used method of building for several of her flower and garden beds. Lisa Anderson will also speak. She first became a Master Gardener in Tarrant County in 2015 and joined the Somervell Master Gardener Association in 2022 (she is currently serving as a Master Gardener in both Tarrant and Somervell Counties!) She is also a Fort Worth Citizen Forester. She and Beverly will conduct a joint program on Lasagna Gardening.

Basics of Herb Gardening will be presented by Lela Evans and Mindy Hanisco. Developing an herb garden can be as simple or as involved as you have time and energy.  Learn how to start with easy to grow herbs. Discover how to grow, harvest, and use herbs for your kitchen and enjoy the incredible flavor of freshly grown and harvested herbs. Lela and Mindy both became certified Master Gardeners in 2023 and want to share their passion about growing herbs.

A third presentation will be “What You Need to Know About Africanized Bees.” Our own bee expert, Kirk Kirksey, will speak on this topic. Kirk has his Master Beekeeper Certification from both the University of Montana and Texas A&M AgriLife. He is the current President of the Glen Rose Dino-Bee Beekeeping Club, and is a Board member of the Texas Honeybee Education Association, and a columnist for the Texas Beekeeper Association. On top of all that, Kirk became a Certified Master Gardener with the Somervell County Master Gardener Association this year.

This educational opportunity is provided by the Somervell County Master Gardener Association and is open and free to the public. In addition to these presentations, many Master Gardeners will be available to answer your own gardening questions. Please join us!
