Waking up Your Garden: Start for a Successful Vegetable Harvest

Dr. Andrew King will discuss steps we can take now to prepare for a successful vegetable Garden. Dr.Andrew King is an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center in Overton, Texas. Library doors open at 11:30 am. Free event open to the public.

The Smith County Master Gardeners will open their 2026 Library Series with a timely, free lecture by Dr. Andrew King on Thursday, January 16, at the Tyler Public Library’s Taylor Auditorium (201 S. College Avenue). Seating begins at 11:30 a.m.; the program runs from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Dr. King, an Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center in Overton, will present “Waking Up Your Garden: Start for a Successful Vegetable Harvest.”

January is the ideal time to set the stage for a productive spring and summer vegetable garden. Dr. King will outline practical steps gardeners can take now—such as soil preparation, weed management, planting plans, and winter cleanup—to ensure strong results when the season warms. His research background and deep familiarity with East Texas climate and soils make this session especially valuable for both new and experienced gardeners.

The 2026 Library Series continues with expert-led topics tailored to our region: No library event in FebruaryMarch 20—Dr. Greg Grant on Growing Tomatoes and Peppers in East Texas; April 17—Tips for Edible Gardening with Smith County Master Gardeners; May 15—Gardening for the Heat with Elizabeth Waldrop.
