Smith County – Earth-Kind® Ecological Gardening & Wildscaping

Tyler, Texas — Residents of East Texas are invited to deepen their understanding of sustainable landscaping at the upcoming Summer Garden Series program on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 2:00–4:00 PM at the Cotton Belt Building, 1517 W. Front St., Suite 116 in Tyler.

The program, titled “Ecological Gardening,” will be presented by Greg Grant, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Smith County, and will focus on practical, science-based strategies for designing resilient, wildlife-friendly landscapes in East Texas.

This educational session will explore the principles of Wildscaping and Earth-Kind® landscaping, two complementary approaches that help homeowners create beautiful, functional landscapes while conserving natural resources. Participants will learn how to select plants based on regional geology, soil types, rainfall patterns, and local ecosystems, ensuring landscapes that thrive with less water, fertilizer, and pesticide.

“Using native and well-adapted plants not only supports wildlife but also reduces inputs like irrigation and chemical treatments while creating environmentally sustainable landscapes,” said Grant.

Wildscaping emphasizes creating habitat by providing the essentials wildlife need—food, water, shelter, and space—through thoughtful plant selection and design. Attendees will learn how plant diversity, layered vegetation, and seasonal blooms can attract birds, butterflies, and other beneficial wildlife while restoring ecological balance in urban and suburban settings.

The program will also address pollinator decline, a growing concern that directly impacts food production and biodiversity. By incorporating native flowering plants and reducing pesticide use, homeowners can play a critical role in supporting pollinator populations such as bees and butterflies.

Earth-Kind landscaping techniques, developed by Texas A&M AgriLife, will also be featured. These research-based practices aim to conserve water, reduce yard waste, and promote responsible fertilizer and pesticide use, all while maintaining attractive and functional landscapes. By combining organic and traditional horticultural methods, Earth-Kind promotes a balanced, environmentally sound approach to gardening.

In addition to plant selection, the program will explore how microclimates, native plant ranges, and provenance influence successful landscape design in East Texas. Attendees will gain insight into how understanding local conditions can significantly improve plant performance and landscape sustainability.

Participants will also learn functional design tips, including how to create multi-layered plantings, provide water sources, and incorporate natural features like logs, snags, and rock structures to enhance habitat value. These strategies not only benefit wildlife but also contribute to important ecosystem services, such as erosion control, improved air quality, and temperature regulation.

The Earth-Kind Summer Garden Series is ideal for homeowners, gardeners, Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists and anyone interested in creating landscapes that are both beautiful and ecologically responsible.
