Evelyn Jane Powell is a deserving candidate for Texas Emerita Master Gardener status, having dedicated her life to gardening and nurturing a passion far beyond her certification in 1994. Throughout her journey as a Master Gardener, Jane exhibited remarkable commitment and leadership, making her an invaluable asset to the Denton County Master Gardener Association (DCMGA) and the broader gardening community.
One of the hallmarks of Jane’s contributions to the DCMGA was her initiation of a significant project at the Cumberland Children’s Home. This endeavor showcased her love for working with children and her desire to enrich the outdoor environment. Jane’s project included developing rose trials, an herb garden, and refurbishing the greenhouse, which not only benefited the children but also left a lasting impact on the local community.
Her dedication and leadership were not only recognized locally but also at the state level. In 1997, she received the “Outstanding Personal Achievement” award from the Texas Master Gardener Association, acknowledging her exceptional contributions. Furthermore, her commitment and service were so remarkable that she was granted the title of “Honorary Life Member” by the Denton County Master Gardener Association in 2000.
Jane’s contributions extended beyond her leadership roles and recognition. She introduced innovative ideas, such as hay bale gardening, which enriched the experiences of Master Gardeners and residents of Cumberland Children’s Home. In addition to her gardening prowess, Jane was a talented poet who shared her love for nature through her writings in the Roto-Teller newsletter, showcasing her multifaceted talents. Even after retiring and relocating to Mesa, Arizona, in 2007, she continued her gardening journey until her passing in 2011.
