This Month’s Story Time Book

Two Old Potatoes and Me-Book Cover

On November 6th, El Paso Master Gardener Rhonda M. Williams will be our presenter to read Two Old Potatoes and Me by John Coy to her online audience (Zoom link is below). The book tells the story of a young girl who finds two old potatoes in her dad’s cupboard. Her dad suggests they try to grow new potatoes from the old ones which have sprouted eyes. Told from May to September, the potato-growing season, they weed, water, wait, and follow the plants’ growth to see if they will get new potatoes. Just like the new potatoes that emerged from ugly old potatoes, the dad and daughter’s story of adjusting to a new life after the parents’ recent divorce is told as one of change and growth. Carolyn Fisher’s artwork infuses joy and humor into this heartwarming story.

El Paso County Master Gardener Presenter

Rhonda WIlliams

Ms. Rhonda M. Williams has volunteered with the El Paso Master Gardeners for about 5 years. She is a retired middle school teacher who enjoyed bringing the great outdoors into her classroom or taking her students outside to learn in the bright sunshine.

Ms. Williams found this month’s story, Two Old Potatoes and Me, to be quite sentimental. It reminded her of the stories her dad shared from his youth. His family owned a farm whose main crop was sweet potatoes. The book also allowed Ms. Williams to reminisce about her mother’s ability to grow “potato” house plants in jelly jars. Finally, Two Old Potatoes and Me reminds her of the times she has shared with her grandchildren gardening during their summer visits.
