David began serving as a Texas Master Gardener in Hays County, where he coordinated the intern class for 10 years. David moved to Gonzales and was instrumental in creating the Gonzales Master Gardener chapter in 2010 where he served two terms as President, and again coordinated the intern class for new Master Gardeners for 10 years. David is a Botanist by training and continues to bring botany to life through his energetic botany class for the Gonzales Master Gardener program and surrounding counties.
During his service to the Gonzales Master Gardeners, David took the lead role in securing and refurbishing the PACE Building, which serves as the location where the Gonzales Master Gardeners conduct their meetings and trainings and is utilized by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and the 4-H program. This location is on the Gonzales ISD property and is an ideal location for teaching students the importance of horticulture and science with the cooperation of the Gonzales Master Gardeners.
Through the service and leadership of David, the Gonzales Master Gardener organization was set up for success. The Extension mission was always a focus, and he made the group aware that the Master Gardener’s most valuable contribution is their time that they volunteer which demands the same level of respect as if the County Agents were doing the work themselves.
David has freely shared his extensive knowledge of horticulture with his fellow Master Gardeners and with the community. His particular focus on the children in the community has led to the development of a number of highly regarded children’s programs for which the Gonzales Master Gardeners have won several TMGA awards recognizing the excellence of the programs. He is a credit to his community and the Gonzales Master Gardener Program.
