Welcome to our Crinum Lily Bed. The bed was established in early 2017 to hold our crinum lilies. We had them in our Flowering Bulb Bed, but due to the size they were getting to be, we decided to build a separate bed for them. The Crinums in the bed are the Ellen Bousenquet, Maiden’s Blush, Milk and Wine, Powellii and Sangria.
Our Crinum Bed is misshapen ellipse with a major axis of @ 25 feet and a minor axis of @ 10 feet. The Crinum bed was constructed as a raised bed for multiple reasons of which the location on the property included partially sloping ground surface which would not be conducive to containing the bulbs or planting medium in place and part of the ground surface included an old asphalt driveway. It came about as a result of the Crinums that were planted in the Bulb Bed were doing so well they were taking over the Bulb Bed…and so the Crinum Bed.

The bed head for the Crinum bed is Hiroko Somsag. Hiroko became a Master Gardener in 2016. She always shows up to help with whatever project the group is doing, including now taking over the Crinum bed in 2023. So here is a great big thank you to Hiroko and all of the other Master Gardeners that have worked to make the Crinum bed all it can be. | |
