Who are Texas Master Gardeners?
Texas Master Gardeners are volunteers, trained by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in research-based horticulture including soils, water conservation, composting, entomology, plant pathology and related subjects.
As Brazos County Extension Service volunteers, they give to the community by extending research-based knowledge and providing solutions in one-to-one problem solving, in a demonstration garden, educational programs and both in-print and social media.
Individuals make application to enter the training. Once accepted into the program, trainees begin a one year process that begins with a minimum of 50 hours of specialized classroom instruction. Texas Master Gardener interns finish requirements by contributing a minimum of 50 service hours by year’s end to be then certified as a Texas Master Gardener.
The certification and title are good for one year. To retain certification in Brazos County, Texas Master Gardeners annually contribute a minimum of 25 service hours and acquire 6 hours of continuing education.

Why did I wait so long to enroll in the Master Gardener program! I moved to Texas from the Midwest and realized quickly that gardening in Texas was very different. Mild winters, hot summers affects when and how you garden. The MG program educates you on gardening no matter where you live. I learned so much, but attending classes and going on fun field trips with fellow classmates who also loved everything gardening made for life-long friends.
