How to Become a Master Gardener

The Texas Master Gardener Program is an educational volunteer program conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, part of the Texas A&M University System.

Extension Master Gardeners (EMGs) are local community members who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens. They are enthusiastic, eager to learn and help others, and enjoy connecting with people from all walks of life.

What sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their specialized training in horticulture. In exchange for this training, Master Gardeners volunteer their time through their county’s AgriLife Extension office to share research-based horticultural knowledge with their communities.

Click here for the application! Once complete, email to [email protected] or mail to P.O. Box 189 Johnson City, TX 78636. The $200 fee must be included with your application for it to be considered complete.

The Blanco County Master Gardeners meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Meetings include engaging horticulture-related presentations and occasional field trips. Our group is very active, so you’re sure to find activities that match your interests.

We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about plants, ecosystems, and sharing that passion with others.

Ask yourself:
– Do I want to learn more about growing and caring for a wide variety of plants?
– Am I excited about hands-on, in-depth training?
– Do I enjoy helping others and sharing gardening knowledge?
– Can I commit the time to attend training and complete volunteer service?

If you answered yes, the Master Gardener program might be a perfect fit!

To Become a Certified Master Gardener:
– Complete 50 hours of approved horticulture education
– Volunteer 50 hours in Extension-approved activities
– Pass a background check

To Maintain Certification Annually:
– Complete 20 hours of volunteer service
– Complete 10 hours of continuing education from approved sources
