Garden Tasks

  • Plant perennials and ornamental grasses
  • Purchase garlic cloves from local nurseries and plant in amended soil.
  • Watch for caterpillars on brassica plants, then remove them or dust plants with Bt
  • Begin planting cover crops: elbon rye, clover, etc
  • Continue deadheading flowers for fall blooms
  • Prepare any tender plants that have been outside for the summer to come in for the winter
  • Mulch garden beds: Add a layer of mulch to protect roots from colder temperatures, retain moisture, and suppress weeds.
  • Keep watering trees and shrubs until there is reliable rainfall, especially pecans, citrus and other fruit trees
  • Prepare and protect tender perennials: Cover or move tender plants indoors if frost is expected. Use frost cloths for extra protection.
  • Harvest herbs and vegetables: Regular harvesting keeps plants productive and prevents loss due to early frosts.
