Monthly Seminar: Bees with the Oermanns

June 17, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Seminar Topic: Bees with the Oermanns

Thursday, June 17, 6pm-8pm in the Learning Center, next door to the Texas A&M Bell County AgriLife Building at 1605 North Main Street, Belton, TX 76513. Space is limited to 50 people.

Presenters: Sherry and Greg Oermann

Sherry is a native Coloradan, living there for 50+ years. Wanting to escape the cold weather and snow, she moved to Texas in 2007. She
brought her Colorado gardening skills with her,  and found they no longer suited the Texas climate. She found the Bell County Master
Gardener Program through one of their lectures and decided to go through the program. Sherry graduated as a Master Gardener in 2019,
and is pursuing Advanced Training in Vegetable Gardening and Greenhouse Management.
She helps her husband Greg grow and maintain their 9 beehives and is an Apprentice Beekeeper. She makes beeswax candles and harvests honey.
She and Greg live on a 44 acre farm in Troy, Texas, and raises vegetables, chickens, and Nubian Dairy goats.

Greg Oermann grew up in rural Missouri, but travelled extensively as a US Army Signal Officer.  He retired from Active Duty in 2005, settling in Central Texas and continuing to work for the Army as a civilian electronics engineer.  He has no idea why he began beekeeping in 2015, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.  For him, the best thing about beekeeping is the variety of activities that can be done: trade skills (making and repairing equipment), animal husbandry (monitoring, feeding, treating hives), cooking (honey recipes and fermenting mead), or nature study (native bees, wildflowers and other pollen sources).  He has completed the Apprentice and Advanced Certifications and working towards Master Certification in the Texas Master Beekeeper Program.  In his spare time, he has studied and is a
“Certified Dairy Goat Quality Producer” through Lanston University (Oklahoma) and earned a certificate in “Farm and Ranch Welding” from Central Texas College.
