The Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program is an international youth gardening program that was developed by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and is administered through the university cooperative Extension network. JMG programs engage children in novel “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that promote a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind. They also inspire youths to be a part of service to others through service learning and leadership development projects. These opportunities encourage leadership development, personal pride, responsibility, as well as community involvement. They also develop critical thinking skills, the ability to identify community concerns, and how to take action to address these concerns through group projects.
Growing good kids by igniting a passion for learning, success, and service through a unique gardening education.
JMG programs are designed for kids and youth, typically ranging from early childhood to middle school age, who have an interest in gardening, nature, and environmental stewardship. It teaches children about plants, soil, water conservation, ecosystems, and more while fostering leadership, responsibility, and teamwork. Schools, homeschool groups, community organizations, 4H clubs, scout groups, and families are just a few of the people we cater to.
The Bastrop County Master Gardeners are currently working to develop our JMG program that we hope to launch in the fall of this year. In the meantime, you can catch us at various community events hosting JMG activities. Be sure to check out our chapter event calendar to see where and when we will be set up.
