Zac and Lois

Originally from The Woodlands, Zac attended Sam Houston State University, majoring in Horticulture with a Biology minor. He became a Walker County Master Gardener in 2007, with emphasis on tropical plants; continued study in Costa Rica and Kailua, Hawaii.

Zach has worked for the Newton Nursery in Houston, the Hawaiian Sunshine Nursery and is currently happy to be at the Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

When not studying plants he is a freelance nature photographer and an avid outdoorsman.

Lois

Amorphophallus titanum, more politely referred to as titan arum or the corpse flower, has gained its celebrity status by having one of the largest, rarest, and smelliest flowers in the world. These flowers can reach heights of 7-10 ft and a diameter of 5-6 ft. During the month of July 2010, Lois herself reached a height of almost 6 feet.

Betty Elvin

Our very own Master Gardener, Betty Elvin, was remembered by the Pre-K gardening class at Gibbs Elementary. Miss Betty (as her students lovingly call her) had her 80th birthday on August 5th, so the entire school emptied out to wish her HAPPY BIRTHDAY! They also presented her with a beautiful quilt of squares made by each of the classes.
