The Invasives Are Here!
By Shirley D. Smith, Somervell County Master Gardener
Every gardener has several plants that they really, really don’t like. More than likely, most of them will be what is called an invasive. An invasive plant has the ability to thrive and spread aggressively outside its natural range. Invasives are a serious problem not only here in Texas but all over the United States.
The Somervell County Master Gardeners will present a program on just this subject Monday, August 8, 6:30pm at the Citizens Center in downtown Glen Rose. Our presenter will be Gary Hinds of Fort Worth. Gary is a Rio Brazos Master Naturalist and has been for 5 years. He got interested in botany, which led to his taking a class on invasives at BRIT and from that class his interest began to grow to where he now gives talks on this subject to various organizations. Gary also has been documenting native plants in this part of Texas.
Gary will address what is an invasive, where they come from, how they spread and what we as gardeners can do to lessen their impact on our environment. All in all, this should be an extremely interesting subject.

Backyard Chicken Presentation (PDF)
If you have ever given thought to having your very own chickens at some point in your life, well now is the time to explore that possibility more fully. June’s Community Horticulture Education Session will be on that very topic. Our speaker will be Beth Skinner, proprietor of Skinner Select Poultry, a small poultry farm located in Alvarado, Texas.
A former city girl, Beth began her exploration into keeping poultry a few years back starting out with the idea of just having a few laying hens for fresh eggs and entertainment. After visiting several poultry farms and experiencing the disappointing and negative consequences of being sold diseased chickens, she decided to expand her operation in order to be a source of healthy poultry for other poultry enthusiasts. Beth is the founder of The Cowtown Backyard Poultry Group, a group she started in June, 2010. She is also a guest speaker on keeping backyard chickens at different venues including Clark Gardens in Mineral Wells and Elizabeth Anna’s Old World Garden in Fort Worth.
We know you do not want to miss hearing Beth speak on this timely subject. In case you don’t know, raising chickens is becoming extremely popular not only in rural areas, but also in suburbia! So, please joint the Somervell County Master Gardeners this coming Monday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Citizens Center, 209 SW Barnard in downtown Glen Rose. See you there!

Announcing the Project 2010 Rose Bush campaign “Let’s put the Rose back in Glen Rose”! This is a joint campaign between the Master Gardener’s and the Glen Rose Chamber of Commerce. We want to initiate a beautification project for the city. The Master Gardener’s are hosting their State Convention in 2011 here in Glen Rose. It will be a HUGE event. We are encouraging everyone – businesses and residents to plant roses at your work and at home. If you can imagine, we could have every entrance to the city lined in rose bushes. We encourage you to participate and order all the rose bushes you want. There are 21 different kinds of roses to pick from. These are Earth-Kind Roses® that have been tested and approved for our type of environment. The roses are very hardy and you don’t need a ‘green thumb’ to keep these roses thriving. There are many types of roses to choose from…climbers, bushes and stand alone. The roses are designated Earth-Kind® through Texas A&M and you can get more information about the varieties we are offering at http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/earthkind/roses/varieties/ The Chamber needs to secure orders of over 100 bushes before the nursery will deliver. We want to make our first order on December 2 – please make your checks payable to the Glen Rose Chamber of Commerce. You can purchase rose bushes from either organization by using our order form and returning it to the Chamber of Commerce or the Master Gardeners

Earth-Kind® Roses with Garey Wylie
We are very pleased and fortunate to have Garey Wylie as a speaker at our next program. He has been a Master Gardener since 2001, was a charter member of the Johnson County Master Gardener Association, served as president of the JCMGA during 2001-2003, has been a director of the Texas Master Gardener Association as well as president of the state organization during 2008. Because he has a passion for roses, he assisted in the organization of and participated in the first Earth-Kind® Rose Specialist Training Course in 2004. He became a member of the Cleburne Parks Board in 2005 and became National coordinator of the Earth-Kind® Rose Program for Parks Departments in 2006. Serving in this capacity led to travels throughout the U.S. with the goal of having Earth-Kind® Roses in city parks nationwide as well as internationally. Earth-Kind® Roses are among the most thoroughly tested, and environmentally responsible plants for use in Texas Landscapes. The roses do very well in almost any soil type. They are not immune to pest problems but their tolerance to pests is so great that they rarely require the use of chemical pesticides. Only a few roses have received the Earth-Kind® designation. However, the list continues to grow as new selections meet the criteria. Garey will discuss how the Earth-Kind® Rose program came into existence, the 19 roses that have thus far earned the designation of Earth-Kind® and much more. All of you will want to have some of these beautiful, easy to grow roses in your garden.

Fire Ants Although you may not have seen many signs of fire ants during the past few months, that does not necessarily mean they are not still around your landscape. During times of drought and extreme temperatures, fire ants just dig deeper down in the soil where conditions are more favorable to their survival. The deeper they go, the more likely there is some moisture and certainly the soil temperature is more moderate.
To help control the proliferation of fire ants, Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Somervell County Master Gardeners are spreading the word that the second week in September is Fire Ant Awareness Week. This is a great time to spread the word about fire ant management due to the fact that fall is generally the best time of year to treat for fire ants.
Josh Blanek, Somervell County Extension Agent-Ag/Nr, will be presenting a program on Fall Fire Ant control using the Texas Two Step Method. Blanek will discuss fire ant control around the home and garden using both a broadcast bait and individually treating each mound. Using the proven Texas Two Step method, one can greatly reduce the amount of fire ant colonies present in the spring.
