History of Somervell County Master Gardeners

Somervell County Master Gardeners Association was chartered in 2001 with 6 members. Each odd year since that time, we have slowly added to our ranks. After the 2009 graduating class, we now have 25 members.

The training for Somervell County is held in combination with Hood and Johnson Counties and is currently held only every other odd year. The next training for our area will be held in the spring of 2011. There are a limited number of spaces allotted for each county, so if the number of applicants exceeds the allotted spaces, applicants are interviewed and selected. Training is generally 10 weeks long, meeting once per week. Location of the training rotates between the 3 participating counties. Upon completion of the classroom training, Interns are required to obtain 50 hours of volunteer service to earn their Master Gardener Certification. SCMGA offers many opportunities to Interns for obtaining these hours. Once certified, Master Gardeners must obtain 12 volunteer hours, plus 6 advanced training hours on an annual basis to maintain their certification.

If you are interested in the SCMGA, we would like to invite and encourage you to visit one of our monthly meetings, so that you might learn more about our various projects and activities. Individuals who have not attended the Master Gardeners Training Program may also become associate members of the SCMGA. Associate membership enables you to regularly attend our monthly meetings and be involved in some of the many aspects of the Master Gardener program. And while associate membership is not required, active involvement in the association may enhance your chances of obtaining one of the limited spaces in the Training Program.

Our regular monthly business meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Somervell County Extension Office. Please check the calendar on this website for meeting date/time confirmation, as occasionally we do make changes.
