THE MILLENIUM SEED BANK PROJECT

MILLENIUM SEED BANK PROJECT

The Millennium Seed Bank Project is our contribution to the Kew Gardens, London, England, efforts to conserve all of the wild plant seed possible to combat changes that are a result of the global warming and population extensions. Kew’s goal is to have a collection of 25% of all of the worlds seed in storage by 2020. They currently have 10% in storage. The Little River Master Gardeners will be contributing by identifying and then collecting the seeds of threatened as well as plants that are indigenous to only our county. 20,000 representative seeds of each species identified will be collected with portions going to the Kew storage vaults as well as some going to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center. Those at the LBJ Wildflower center will be used for research as well as for conservation.

The following are the ones that have been targeted for January.  Please review the details in the attached PDF files and see if you can identify any on your properties.

During the coming year, we will continue to add to the list of those seeds that we will be collecting.
