Title: El Paso Master Gardener Volunteer
Location: Texas AgriLife Extension Service – El Paso, and El Paso Garden Center
Purpose:
To extend Texas AgriLife Extension’s educational programs in the areas of horticulture, gardening and small scale food production through the participation of certified Master Gardener volunteers.
Position Description:
Answer horticultural questions and inquiries by telephone; staff clinics, demonstrations and/or workshops for the general public on gardening, trees, shrubs, lawns, plants, insects and related topics. Assist with demonstration gardens.
Cooperate with and assist the Texas AgriLife Extension Service staff in preparation and production of educational resources.
Keep appropriate records.
Requirements:
Able to participate in an intensive Master Gardener horticulture training program. Must devote a minimum of 60 hours or more of volunteer service during training/certification period and 30 hours annually thereafter. In addition, 10 hours of re-certification education credits must be completed annually.
Must be knowledgeable and skilled in basic ornamental horticulture, gardening and related areas following classroom training.
Able to clearly and effectively communicate with the public by telephone, personal and group contact or through writing and correspondence.
Supervision:
The Executive and Volunteer Coordination Committees of the El Paso Master Gardener Association coordinate Master Gardener activities, Committee Chairs and Project Coordinators. All are ultimately responsible to the local County Extension Agent – Horticulture or the County Director. The Agent provides supervision and support; reviews and assesses work; and facilitates in-service training, workspace, telephone and other necessary items.
